BS EN 12472:2005, A Method for the Simulation of Wear and Corrosion of Coated Items.

This is a summary of the test method. Due to copyright regulations the full test method must be purchased from the nominated National Standards Body.

The wear of objects in contact with the skin depends very much on nature and shape of the objects and the activities of the person concerned. The intention of this test is to produce a time-dependent wear and corrosion which can be related to the duration of a coating in normal use. By its nature this is a pragmatic solution to the problems posed by the evaluation of coated items which are in contact with the skin, and which may be subject to several kinds of wear.

This European Standard describes a method for accelerated wear and corrosion, to be used for the detection of nickel release from coated items, that come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin.

The items to be tested are exposed to a corrosive atmosphere before being placed into a container together with abrasive chips, water, and a wetting agent. The container is rotated so as to subject the test pieces to friction from the mass of abrasive chips. This action smoothes the surfaces and abrades the coatings of the test items. The items are then tested for nickel release by the BS EN 1811:2011, the reference test method for nickel release.

NOTE: Indicative information on the extent of nickel release may be obtained using prEN 12471, the scanning test method for nickel release.

Test Report

In addition to the information required by the nickel release test according to the BS EN 1811:2011, the reference test method for nickel release, the test report shall contain the following particulars:

  1. The reference and a short description of the method used for wear and corrosion treatment;
  2. Deviations from this standard procedure;
  3. Any unusual feature observed during the test, or observation;
