  • Introduction

    This is a summary of the proposed test method.

    The document describes a pre-test method which if chosen and the result is negative then is followed by one of the remaining two tests - a laboratory application or a field application to confirm the nickel release. These test methods may be done on their own.

    NOTE: The laboratory application and the field application were found to correlate well with the results from BS EN 1811:1999, the reference test method for nickel release for a variety of materials.

    Scope

    This European Standard presents a quick screening method, based on the use of dimethylglyoxime, suitable for the evaluation of nickel release from items that come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin, with special reference to nickel allergy.

    This test is not intended as a replacement for BS EN 1811:1999, but is designed to assist the Industry.

    Principle

    The method is based on the formation of a red complex when nickel ions come in contact with dimethylglyoxime solution in the presence of ammonia. In order to increase the sensitivity of the test pre-treatment with artificial sweat and heat is used to induce corrosion of the surface, simulating the influence of sweat when the object is in contact with the skin. This screening method gives a result in a short time. The result is indicative and provides guidance when evaluating objects for nickel release. People carrying out the tests shall have normal colour vision.

    NOTE: For a quantitative result the reference test method described in BS EN 1811:1999, the reference test method for nickel release has to be used.

    Test Report

    The test report for items tested under laboratory conditions only shall include:

    1. Identification of the sample including source, date of receipt, form of sample;
    2. Sampling procedure;
    3. The reference and a short description of the method used;
    4. Nickel release shall given as positive, negative, or doubtful with specification of which part of the object has been tested;
    5. Deviations from this standard method;
    6. Any unusual features observed during the testing;
    7. Date of test;
    8. Identification of the laboratory carrying out the test;
    9. Signature of the laboratory manager and operator.
